The 17th Annual Powwow Weekend

Tesoro Cultural Center PowwowOur Living History Experience has an American Indian focus all three days of our Opening Weekend, with a Demonstration Powwow on Friday and Sunday, and a Contest Powwow on Saturday.

This Contest Powwow event includes:

  • Grand Entry at 11:00am
  • The American Indian Veterans of Colorado Color Guard
  • Host Northern Drum – Mile High Drum
  • Host Southern Drum – Cozad Jr’s. Drum
  • Powwow Contest in multiple Categories for Golden Age, Men’s, Women’s, Teens, Juniors, and Tiny Tots
  • Several Dance Categories including Traditional, Fancy, Grass, Shawl & Jingle
  • 2017 American Indian Veteran Honoring Ceremony in Recognition of Armed Forces Day
  • Remembering The Brave – Native American Hall of Heroes Memorial Panels
  • HawkQuest – Live Birds of Prey

This Living History Experience Includes

  • Hands-On Activities for all ages
  • An introduction to Shinin’ Times narrated by Sam Arnold (as shown on PBS)
  • National Park Service documentary film Bent’s Fort, The Sand Creek Massacre and the Civil War
  • Mini exhibits on the cultural diversity of early Colorado
  • Short films including Early Spanish Settlers of Colorado, The Utes, and The Kiowa People
  • Bent’s Quarters Trade Room with its collection of medicinal herbs, beads, buttons, china, calico, tobacco twists, sugar cones, tea bricks, and more!
